Retreating Glaciers

Franz Josef Glacier, 1964

Franz Josef Glacier, located in New Zealand, retreated dramatically in the twentieth century. Taken in 1964, this photograph is the last in a series the documents the glacier's retreat. After 14 years of retreating back up the valley, the glacier's terminus is barely visible. (Unattributed photograph at the World Data Center for Glaciology
