Franz Josef Glacier, located in New Zealand, retreated dramatically in the twentieth century. This photograph, taken in 1951, is the first of a series which documents the glacier's retreat over the subsequent 14 years.(Unattributed photograph at the World Data Center for Glaciology, Boulder)
