How can I find a photo?

Images in the NSIDC Photo & Image Gallery are organized by subject, project, location, and photographer. Browse the gallery by category using the drop-down menus, or search for a specific subject using the search interface.

How do I download a photo?

To download an image, click on the thumbnail to access the image information page. To download the high-resolution image, click on the image. You can also download the thumbnail version of an image by right clicking on the image.

How can I use the photos in this gallery?

Photos in this gallery are available free of charge for users to download. However, the photos come from a variety of sources, and may have different copyright restrictions and credits. Please read the information accompanying each photo before publishing it.

Please provide proper credits for any photo you use from the NSIDCPhoto & Image Gallery. Citation information is listed for each photo in the "Image Credit" section on the file information page. If an image does not have citation information, we ask that the image be credited as having been provided by the National Snow and Ice Data Center.

The NSIDC Web site image use policy is as follows:

Any images taken from our Web site that are not explicitly cited are public domain, but we do still appreciate being credited in publications. Below is how we recommend that you cite images taken from one of our Web pages: If the image is cited on our Web site as being courtesy of another person or agency, we recommend the following citation: "Image/photo courtesy of [insert agency and/or person name here], supplied by the National Snow and Ice Data Center, University of Colorado, Boulder." If the image is uncited on our Web site, we recommend the following citation: "Image/photo courtesy of the National Snow and Ice Data Center, University of Colorado, Boulder." Where can I find more information about a photo?

Each image contains caption, credit, and copyright information. Some images also have links to related Web sites. To access that information, click on the image thumbnail to display the image information page.

For more details regarding a particular photo, please contact the NSIDC photo gallery administrator.

Where did the photos in the gallery come from?

The NSIDC Photo & Image Gallery contains over 1,000 photos related to the cryosphere—the frozen realms of the Earth. Most of the photos were taken by NSIDC scientists and staff during field expeditions and travel.

Where can I find a larger version of this photo?

To access the high-resolution photo, click on the photo from the photo information page. The high-resolution photo displays in a pop-up window.

Users may also download the high-resolution photo by clicking on "Download Full-Size Image" under file information.

Can I submit my photographs to the gallery?

If you wish to submit a photograph to the NSIDC Photo & Image Gallery, please contact NSIDC User Services. By submitting a photo, you agree to make it publicly available, free of charge.
