Arctic Buildings18 viewsDue to changes in the ice floe surface, it was not uncommon for camps to relocate to more stable ground. This photograph was taken during the rebuilding of the camp NP-22 in 1980. Aluminum tent poles are at the right, and an overturned boat is at the left. Image credit: EWG.

Taking Scientific Measurements19 viewsDetermining instrument location by theodolite. A theodolite is a high-precision surveying instrument. Because the ice floes rotated and changed in topography as they drifted, undergoing freezing and thawing, station members needed to regularly determine the position of the instruments relative to each other and to North. Fimbul Ice Shelf1015 viewsThe Fimbul Ice Shelf is punctuated by numerous ice rises that occur where isolated rocky islands are covered by ice. Ice shelves may be particularly sensitive to changes in climate, and recently ice shelves in the Antarctic Peninsula have experienced rapid retreat

692 viewsOne of the most studied and interesting ice streams in Antarctica, Ice Stream B shows a number of features that indicate past changes and ongoing evolution. In this subscene the upstream ends of several ice stream shear margins are highlighted. Characteristic crevasse patterns, nicknamed "chromosomes," mark the ends of several of these margin traces.

800 viewsThis map shows the spatial distribution of the rate of elevation change from the Elevation Change of the Southern Greenland Ice Sheet from 1978-1988 data set. The data was acquired from Seasat and Geosat radar altimeter data. It shows a 2000 m surface elevation contour, the ice divide, and the locations of nine shallow and three deeper ice cores in the study area.
