Distribution of velocity measurments on the Filchner/Ronne Ice Shelf

This map coresponds to Figure 1 in Vaughn and Jonas, 1996. The red crosses represent the "published measurements" reported in the paper, and the blue crosses show the more recent velocity measurements made using satellite imagery.

The crosses are plotted on an AVHRR image from 1980 (Ferrigno et al., 1996) and the velocity measurements where taken after 1980. Between 1980 and time the measurements were taken the ice front has advanced, therefore the crosses that appear to be on water in the map are actually on the advected ice.

Note: The red cross near -74.2333S and -59.6500W is taken from Lange, 1985 (see Related Publications). This location may be in error, or may represent an iceberg; the shelf front has never extended to that area.
