Minor version changes to bootstrap sea ice concentrations from Nimbus-7 SMMR and DMSP SSM/I-SSMIS

11 July 2018

The Bootstrap Sea Ice Concentrations from Nimbus-7 SMMR and DMSP SSM/I-SSMIS dataset, distributed through the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC) is now in Version 3.1. In the latest release, the sea ice concentration field derived from the Bootstrap algorithm uses an “open water” identifier that is calculated daily in May and October. In Version 3.0, this value was calculated using a single monthly value for May and a single monthly value for October. The difference in total Arctic sea ice area and sea ice extent between the two versions is typically small (less than ± 0.5%), except in the second half of May when daily sea ice areas are often 0.5-1.5% higher and extents are 1-3% higher in Version 3.1 than in Version 3.0.

Version 3 Now Available for Sea Ice Trends and Climatologies from SMMR and SSM/I-SSMIS

19 April 2018

The Sea Ice Trends and Climatologies from SMMR and SSM/I-SSMIS data set available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC) has been updated to Version 3.

The following changes were made to this version of data:

  • Extended the temporal coverage of the data to 31 December 2016.
  • Incorporated a change from Version 2 to Version 3 of the Bootstrap data set. For V3 Bootstrap data, the concentration record was re-calculated for the entire period of the data set, 1978 through current processing. The most impactful changes were a lowering of the threshold to 10% for ice extent, and the recalculation of the algorithm’s tie points every day. However, despite the new 10% threshold for Bootstrap input data, this Sea Ice Trends and Climatologies data set continues to be derived using a 15% threshold.

NSIDC DAAC Updates Near-Real-Time Polar Stereographic SSMIS Brightness Temperature Data Set

14 June 2016

The NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC) has updated the Near-Real-Time DMSP SSMIS Daily Polar Gridded Brightness Temperatures data set so that it now solely provides data from the DMSP-F18 SSMIS sensor beginning with 01 April 2016 due to the compromised data integrity of the DMSP-F17 SSMIS vertically polarized 37 GHz channel (37V). Data before 01 April 2016 are still from the F17 SSMIS.

NSIDC DAAC Updates Near-Real-Time SSMIS Polar Stereographic Sea Ice Concentration Data Set

14 June 2016

The NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC) has completed investigating calibration of data from the DMSP-F18 SSMIS sensor for the Near-Real-Time DMSP SSMIS Daily Polar Gridded Sea Ice Concentration data set. The tie points used with F17 SSMIS data provided the best match in sea ice extent, so no adjustment to the tie points were made for F18. The average difference between F17- and F18-derived sea ice extents were approximately 20,000 sq km. This data set now uses F17 data from 01 January 2015 through 31 March 2016 and then F18 data from 01 April 2016 onward.

Compromised Data Integrity with the F17 Near-Real-Time DMSP SSMIS Daily Polar Gridded Brightness Temperatures Data Set

5 May 2016

Due to the compromised data integrity with the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) F-17 vertically polarized 37 GHz channel (37V) of the Special Sensor Microwave Imager and Sounder (SSMIS), NSIDC will be distributing data from both the F17 and F18 satellites, starting with 1 April 2016 data. Using data from the 37V channel from the F17 satellite is not recommended. Instead, you should use data from the F18 satellite’s 37V channel.

On 04/05/2016 a change in the solar panel position to shade the nitrogen tank on board the DMSP F-17 satellite was made. In doing so, the integrity of the vertically polarized 37V channel of the SSMIS was compromised. On 04/13/16 an additional change in the solar panel position was made. This change had improved the problems we were seeing in the 37V GHz channel; however, on April 20, the 37V GHz channel started to produce bad data again. Thus, a decision to use F18 data was made at that time.

NSIDC Halts Production of the Near-Real-Time DMSP SSMIS Daily Polar Gridded Sea Ice Concentrations F17 Data

5 May 2016

Due to the compromised data integrity with the DMSP F17 vertically polarized 37 GHz channel (37V) of the Special Sensor Microwave Imager and Sounder (SSMIS), which is a primary channel used for sea ice development, NSIDC is halting production of the Near-Real-Time DMSP SSMIS Daily Polar Gridded Sea Ice Concentrations F17 data and switching over to the F18 satellite, starting with 1 April 2016 data. However, NSIDC is still working on the calibration of the F18 data so temporarily the F18 data will be uncalibrated and using F17 tie points.

Notice Regarding Data Corrections

17 September 2013

Reprocessing is complete and updated data are now available through 31 December 2012 for all Sea Ice Trends and Sea Ice Trends and Climatologies from SMMR and SSM/I-SSMIS data sets. With this update, the following changes have been implemented:

Total Ice-Covered Area and Extent
  • The cutoff value which defines a region as ice-covered or not ice-covered has been adjusted from 14.8 percent to 15 percent to more closely match the methodology used to calculate other sea ice extent and area products at NSIDC.
Ice Persistence and Monthly Climatology of Sea Ice Concentration (Monthly Means)
  • Includes the new 15 percent cutoff value described above.
  • To prevent inconsistencies between different algorithms, these parameters are now calculated exclusively using the NASA team algorithm.
Monthly Ocean Masks and Maximum Extent Masks
  • The ocean mask files and maximum extent mask files have been temporarily removed as they are not the masks used in the production of these data sets. NSIDC is currently standardizing masks across all sea ice products and will distribute the replacement masks as soon as they are available.

This most recent reprocessing also rectifies two previous releases of these data sets that contained erroneous data. In January/February of 2012, and May of 2013, the products were to have contained data from 2007 to 2010 and from 2010 to 2011, respectively. However, the climatology products contained data only through 2007. We recommend replacing previously downloaded 2010 and 2011 climatology data files with the climatology files that now extend through 2012. The Total Ice-Covered Area and Extent data set did contain post-2007 data, but reprocessed data utilizing the new methodology are available in the 2012 release.

For more information or help with these data sets, please contact NSIDC User Services.
