SMEX05 Landsat Thematic Mapper GEOTIFF Imagery: IowaThis data set provides imagery developed from Landsat 5 Thematic Mapper (TM) data for use in studying land cover features. Data are provided in Georeferenced Tagged Image File Format (GeoTIFF). Each band of Landsat data in the GeoTIFF format is delivered as a grayscale, uncompressed, 8-bit string of unsigned integers. An ASCII text metadata (MTL) file is included with data processed through the Level-1 Product Generation System (LPGS). An ASCII text file containing the Ground Control Points (GCP) used during image processing is also included. The Landsat 5 TM data are available from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) EarthExplorer Web site, identified as L4-5 TM under Landsat Archive. Temporal coverage for the SMEX05 campaign spans from 10 June 2005 to 03 July 2005. The Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer - Earth Observing System (AMSR-E) is a mission instrument launched aboard NASA's Aqua satellite on 04 May 2002. AMSR-E validation studies linked to SMEX are designed to evaluate the accuracy of AMSR-E soil moisture data. Specific validation objectives include: assessing and refining soil moisture algorithm performance; verifying soil moisture estimation accuracy; investigating the effects of vegetation, surface temperature, topography, and soil texture on soil moisture accuracy; and determining the regions that are useful for AMSR-E soil moisture measurements.
