NSIDC DAAC Releases Polar Stereographic Valid Ice Mask Data Set

15 May 2015

The NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC) is pleased to announce the release of the Polar Stereographic Valid Ice Masks Derived from National Ice Center Monthly Sea Ice Climatologies data set. These valid ice masks provide a way to remove spurious ice caused by residual weather effects and land spillover in passive microwave data, and are derived from the National Ice Center Arctic Sea Ice Charts and Climatologies data.

5 May 2015

The NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC) is pleased to announce that the Bootstrap Sea Ice Concentrations from Nimbus-7 SMMR and DMSP SSM/I-SSMIS, Version 2 data set has been updated through 31 December 2014.

NSIDC DAAC Updates Passive Microwave Sea Ice Concentration Data Set

16 March 2015

The NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC) is pleased to announce that the Sea Ice Concentrations from Nimbus-7 SMMR and DMSP SSM/I-SSMIS Passive Microwave Data has been updated through 31 December 2014. In addition, SSMIS Northern Hemisphere data beginning 01 January 2008 has been replaced with data that includes a reduced pole hole covering 0.029 million sq km which is ten times smaller than the previous pole hole. This new pole hole will continue to be applied to new data going forward.

NSIDC DAAC Updates Near-Real-Time Passive Microwave Sea Ice Concentration

16 March 2015

The NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC) is pleased to announce that the Near-Real-Time DMSP SSMIS Daily Polar Gridded Sea Ice Concentrations data set has been updated with a reduced pole hole for Northern Hemisphere data. In addition, this update includes improved Northern Hemisphere masks for removing residual weather effects. These two changes affect data beginning 01 January 2015.

Erroneous Sea Ice Concentration Data Updated

8 August 2014

The NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC) has been notified of erroneous data contained in the sea ice concentration field of the Sea Ice Nimbus-7 SMMR and DMSP SSM/I-SSMIS Passive Microwave Data for the date of 14 September 1984. A geolocation error in the source data resulted in the addition of several hundred thousand square kilometers of erroneous ice for both the Arctic and Antarctic records. The original files have been removed and replaced with an average of the two records nearest in time (September 12 and 16, 1984). The monthly September 1984 average concentration field was reprocessed using the corrected September 14 data. To access the replacement data, please see the data set documentation.

Sea Ice Trends and Climatology Data Set Updated

6 August 2014

The NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC) is pleased to announce that the Sea Ice Trends and Climatologies from Scanning Multichannel Microwave Radiometer (SMMR) and Special Sensor Microwave Imager/Sounder (SSMIS) have been updated through 31 December 2013 for all products of the data set. Please note that the directory structure for the data has changed since the last update. For more information or to download the updated data, please see the documentation for the data set.

Update to Polar Stereographic Brightness Temperatures Data Set

19 June 2014

NSIDC is pleased to announce that the “DMSP SSM/I-SSMIS Daily Polar Gridded Brightness Temperatures” data set has been updated through 31 May 2014. For more information and to access the new data, see the documentation for this data set.

NASA Team Sea Ice Concentrations Data Set Updated

9 June 2014

NSIDC is pleased to announce that the “Sea Ice Concentrations from Nimbus-7 SMMR and DMSP SSM/I-SSMIS Passive Microwave Data” data set has been updated through December 2013.

Please note that this update includes replacement data for January through September 2013. Previously, data for this time span included temporal interpolation, particularly at the end of months as all data were not available. The data have now been finalized, and values may have changed slightly. NSIDC recommends that those who downloaded the data prior to 9 June 2014, download the replacement data for January through September 2013. Going forward, only the latest update will need to be downloaded as temporal interpolation will not be included in the production process.

Also, browse images for the entire record have been reprocessed to include a title and simplified color bar. The data have not been affected other than the January through September 2013 period.  To access the data, see the data set’s documentation page. If you have any questions, please contact NSIDC User Services at nsidc@nsidc.org.
