GISMO Release Notes

Version 2.6:

DATABASE: The database gismo connects to has been incorporated into the larger inventory fro the entire data center. The connection has been upgrade from jdbc to WS

XXX March, 2007

Version 2.5:

SNODAS: A second instantiation of the GISMO has been created for the SNOw Data Assimilation System data generated by the NOAA National Weather Service's National Operational Hydrologic Remote Sensing Center (NOHRSC) and archived at NSIDC. This data differs significantly from the NASA Pathfinder data that has traditionally been available via the GISMO so we felt it prudent to keep them separated.

GISMO search and subsetting capability remains the same for both interfaces with the minor exception that SNODAS granules are daily snapshots so the ability to search by daily period would not be useful and has been removed from the SNODAS interface.

Version 2.4:

Plugin version:The java plugin version 1.3 has reached end-of-life and is no longer supported for most platforms. The GISMO does not work with the plugin version 1.4, but it does work with the recently released plugin version 1.5 (or Java5). We have tested with a number of browsers on a variety of platforms, but lack the capability to test every possible configuration. If you experience any difficulty please contact us.

Geographic: A problem with the map display has been fixed so the display is more reliable now. Previously, the map would occasionally not display correctly and the way to resolve the problem was to choose another map that displayed correctly, and then select the original map again. Maps should display on the first try now, and if they do not, simply resizing the window should suffice. Please contact User Services if you notice any problems with the map.

Version 2.3:

Periodic Search: The date range panel has been replaced with the new periodic panel. The periodic panel enables searching on annual and daily periods in addition to the usual temporal range search. For more information on the new periodic panel, please see the Date Range section in the help.

Size: To accommodate the periodic panel the interface had to be made taller. This means the keyword panel and the geographic panel now have a lot of empty space. They may look odd, but they work the same way they always have.

Area Default: Previously the default area in the geographic panel was one pixel in the upper left corner of the grid (0,0). Since the GISMO is a subsetter the thinking was everyone would have to pick a subset area, so it didn't really matter what the default was. But some users don't pick a subset area and it's highly unlikely anyone actually wants just that particular point. So we changed the default area to be the entire grid.

AVHRR: We have terminated GISMO support for the AVHRR Polar Pathfinder Twice-Daily 1.25 km EASE-Grid Composites. Users who really need 1.25 km resolution data can access the AVHRR Polar 1 km Level 1b Data Set via the Search and Browse Tool to get raw scene data.

We continue to support the AVHRR Polar Pathfinder Twice-Daily 5 km EASE-Grid Composites.

We have added support for the new AVHRR Polar Pathfinder Twice-Daily 25 km EASE-Grid Composites.

GIS: GISMO output is binary data. As such it has always been GIS compatable. We have now added some functionality to the backend processing to create output that is more GIS friendly, if requested.

All GISMO requests now include a "prj" file, containing the projection parameters of the data, and a sample "hdr" file, containing more specific coverage information. If GIS output is requested the GISMO backend processing also creates a "hdr" file for each data file, and adds a ".bsq" extension to each data file. This should facilitate bringing the data into ARCView or similar GIS systems. At present GIS friendly output is still experimental so let us know if you find any problems with it.

Version 2.2:

ASCII Tables: ASCII output is now an option for small areas.  If you request ASCII output you will receive a table containing the file names of the data files and the pixel values in those files.  Currently the definition of "small area" is "less than 65 pixels".  For more information see the FAQ.

Results Preservation: The search results are no longer deleted after a user submits a request.  Users wishing to submit more than one request from the same results list no longer need to redo the search each time.

Date Range Validation: The interface is now more lenient about ensuring the date range is valid.  Previously the interface would never allow an invalid date range, even while the user was in the midst of changing it.  The interface now waits until the user submits a search request before validating the date range.  If the interface finds an invalid date range it warns the user and does not run the search.

Choice Widgets: We found that Choice widgets do not work properly on SGI and Linux boxes when using the Java2 plugin.  To accommodate users on those platforms the Choice widgets in the geographic panel have been replaced with ComboBox widgets that have the same functionality.  We have noticed that the ComboBox menu sometimes appears in an odd location (not directly under the widget as expected) but at least it appears.

Version 2.1:

Connect Errors: New users sometimes experience difficulty connecting to the database.  To the interface it appears that the database is down, however this is not necessarily the case.  More commonly, the user is behind a firewall and/or using a proxy server that will not allow a connection to the database port.  We now have a more informative error message when this occurs.

Geographic: The geographic panel now has more appealing maps and supports zooming, single pixel requests, and input of (lat, lon) and (row, col) coordinates . The latter should benefit users who wish to request the same subset as a previous request.  For more information on the new geographic panel, please see the Geographic section in the help.

Size: To accommodate the much larger geographic panel, the size of the entire interface needed to be increased beyond the display capabilities of some platforms.  To work around this problem, we removed the map from the geographic panel and made it an independent window.  Consequently, the main interface (minus the map) is smaller than before. Since the map is in a separate window, it can be resized which means less scrolling for the larger maps.

Request Submission: The interface submits requests using a POST operation instead of a GET.  As a result, request submissions are now faster, though large requests may still take a while.
