Data Summary

Data for Integrated Terrain Unit Map (ITUM) polygon coverages are provided for each of five mapped areas in two versions: with legends standardized for intercomparability (ca. 1997), and as originally mapped with unique legends (mapped in various years prior to 1997). The Kuparuk River Basin Region landcover map is satellite derived, and so is available in original raster format only.

Supplemental maps (polygon and point coverages and grids) are available for each map area, both as individual files, and tarred collectively.

Notes

File formats:

• Files are in ArcInfo Export format (coverages: .e00 extension) or g-zipped tar files (grids and collections of coverages: .tar.gz extension)
• Note that ALL of the ITUM coverages are named "ITUM.e00"--if more than one is downloaded, import it into an appropriate workspace
• Tarred grid files include info directories; supplemental coverage tar files consist of a collection of ArcInfo Export files

Related tables:

• Relates are defined in an info file named ITUM.RELATE for each ITUM coverage
• Item codes are defined in related tables included in coverages
• Cross-comparison info tables used to translate from the original ITUM codes to the standardized ITUM codes are included in the standardized ITUM coverages

Recreating maps:

• Sample AMLs, used to create the icons displayed on individual area pages, indicate usage of relates and shadesets
• Shade symbols are assigned in associated related or lookup tables
• Three shadesets are referenced in the icon AMLs: pantone.shd.e00, greyramp.shd.e00 and rustramp.shd.e00
• ITUM item legend key files (abbreviated and expanded versions)
• Two of the map areas were mapped with irregular boundaries, and a mapangle may be set to straighten them for a display:
  Toolik Lake Grid (1:500-scale maps): mapangle -6.8
  Upper Kuparuk River Subregion (1:25,000-scale maps): mapangle 2.514

Projection information:

• All maps are in UTM Zone 6 with a Y-shift of -7,000,000 meters

Map standardization:

• A graphical display of Standardized Hierarchical Vegetation Mapping Units is available
• When maps were standardized, several original mapping units may have been combined to form a standardized mapping unit. This may result in primary, seconday, or tertiary units being duplicated in the standardized version, whereas they were unique in the original version

Map documentation:

• Some original map documentation, describing mapping techniques, etc., is available as originally submitted (may have outdated file names, but can still be useful information)
• Digital Chart of the World (DCW) coverage documentation and item definitions (used as overlays for the Kuparuk River Basin Region (1:250,000-scale maps))
