This data set consists of Gas-isotopic data from the Siple Dome and Byrd ice cores covering roughly the last 100,000 years (100 ka), consisting of d15N (15N/14N) of N2, d18O (18O/16O) of O2, dO2/N2, and dAr/N2. Derived parameters include past changes in the Dole Effect and the fractionation that causes the Dole Effect.
Data are available via FTP as ASCII text files (.txt) and Microsoft Excel files (.xls).
To broaden awareness of our services, NSIDC requests that you acknowledge the use of data sets distributed by NSIDC. Please refer to the citation below for the suggested form, or contact NSIDC User Services for further information. We also request that you send us one reprint of any publication that cites the use of data received from our Center. This helps us to determine the level of use of the data we distribute. Thank you.

Delta18Oatm is a useful variable for correlating ice cores, and for inferring information about past climate and ice extent. At any given time, delta18O is approximately constant throughout the atmosphere, but this value varies over time due to changes in the hydrologic cycle, ice sheet volume, and worldwide patterns of plant growth.
The nitrogen and oxygen gas isotopes were analyzed on a ThermoFinnigan MAT Delta Plus XP isotope ratio mass spectrometer with 8 Faraday cups for simultaneous integration of mass/charge 28, 29, 32, 34, and 40 ion beams.
The nitrogen and oxygen gas isotopes were analyzed using cores obtained at Siple Dome, West Antarctica (81.65°S, 148.81°W) during the 1994/1995 field season, and at Byrd Station (80°01'S, 119°32'W) during the 1967-68 austral summer.
