Citing NSIDC Data

You may download and use any imagery or text from our Web site, unless it is specifically stated that the information has limitations for its use. Please credit the National Snow and Ice Data Center. Please cite the use of our data in your work with a formal citation.

Citation acknowledges our data contributors, and allows us to track the use and impact of our data. It also helps us report data distribution activity to funding agencies, and to assist others who may contact us about data that are referenced in publications.

How to cite NSIDC data

  • Please include a citation in the references section of your publication. While we appreciate acknowledgement in the text of the publication, we are better able to track the use of our data sets if citations are included as references.

  • You can find appropriate citations on the catalog pages and in the documentation for many of our data sets. If you need assistance with a citation format, please contact NSIDC User Services.

Use of Photographs and Photograph Credits

You may download photos on this site free of charge. However, the photos come from a variety of sources, and may have different copyright restrictions and credits. Please read the information accompanying each photo before publishing it.

Please provide proper credits for any photo you use:

  • If the image is cited on our Web site as being courtesy of another person or agency, we recommend the following citation: "Image/photo courtesy of [insert agency and/or person name here] and the National Snow and Ice Data Center, University of Colorado, Boulder."
  • If the image does not have specific citation information on our Web site, we recommend the following citation: "Image/photo courtesy of the National Snow and Ice Data Center, University of Colorado, Boulder."

For questions about image use and credits, please contact NSIDC User Services.
