Overview

Currently, NSIDC is not distributing AVHRR data because of errors in the data. However, replacement data are expected sometime in 2013. The replacement data set will be very similar to the AVHRR Polar Pathfinder Twice-Daily 5 km EASE-Grid Composites data set previously distributed at NSIDC. The data will span from 1982 to 2011 consisting of twice-daily calibrated and gridded satellite channel data.

The AVHRR instrument is used for a wide range of applications in polar and climate research. AVHRR data provide a global, long-term, consistent time series with high spectral and spatial resolution suitable for albedo and surface temperature measurements. Such measurements are necessary for studies involving climate, sea ice distribution and movement, and ice sheet coastal configuration.
