Physical and Chemical Properties from
Selected Expeditions in the Arctic Ocean

The purpose of this data collection is to preserve and distribute physical and chemical data from the Arctic Ocean that have been compiled through a cooperative international effort involving the United States, Canada, Germany, Sweden, and Russia. The original data, collected sporadically since 1950, were collected during icebreaker and conventional research vessel cruises and from ice camps using traditional wire casts, CTD (conductivity, temperature, depth) casts, and CTD/rosette casts. Also included are positional data and, for some expeditions, derived measurements of oxygen, nutrients, and alkalinity.

A variety of data and related information is available.

  • Collection documentation provides an overview of collection contents, data processing and formats, sampling methods, and other important information. We recommend that you review the documentation before using collection data.
  • Links found throughout this site provide access to lists of data sets currently available via ftp. Additional data sets will be added periodically.
  • Convenient overviews of individual data sets provide specific information about each data set's coverage and parameters. Overviews are accessible via data access links.
  • The ftp directory containing collection data can also be accessed directly.
  • For your reference, a chronologic listing of site revisions is provided. Check back periodically for links to newly-available data sets and other additions.
  • For information about funding and other collection credits, see acknowledgments.
