Version 5 Aquarius Polar-Gridded Data Now Available at NSIDC DAAC

17 December 2015

The Aquarius polar-gridded Version 5 products are now available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC). These data sets include weekly polar-gridded Level-3 products of Aquarius L-band Normalized Radar Cross Section retrievals, Sea Surface Salinity retrievals, and radiometer Brightness Temperature observations.

New Version 4 Aquarius Soil Moisture Data, and New Soil Moisture Climatologies

5 October 2015

Version 4 Aquarius L2 Swath Single Orbit Soil Moisture Data, and Version 4 Aquarius L3 Gridded 1-Degree Soil Moisture data are now available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC). The Level-2 data set contains global soil moisture estimates. The Level-3 data sets contain gridded daily, weekly, monthly, seasonal, and annual global soil moisture estimates.

Aquarius/SAC-D Mission Ends

1 July 2015

Due to a power failure on the Satélite de Aplicaciones Científicas (SAC)-D spacecraft on 08 June 2015, data from NASA’s Aquarius instrument are no longer being produced. For more information on this event, please refer to the official NASA announcement. The NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC) will continue to distribute Aquarius soil moisture and polar-gridded data sets for the full duration of the mission, 25 August 2011 to 07 June 2015.  For further information and to access Aquarius data at the NSIDC DAAC, see the NSIDC Aquarius project page.

New Version 3 Aquarius Level-2 Soil Moisture Data

24 November 2014

Version 3 Aquarius L2 Swath Single Orbit Soil Moisture data are now available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC). This data set contains Level-2 global soil moisture estimates derived from the NASA Aquarius passive microwave radiometer on the Satélite de Aplicaciones Científicas (SAC-D).  Changes in Version 3 include: use of the most recent version (Version 3) of Aquarius Brightness Temperatures as input; Aquarius Brightness Temperatures are no longer re-calibrated before soil moisture retrievals as was done for Version 2 data;  and soil moisture observations are valid over a wider range of brightness temperatures compared to Version 2 data.  See the Aquarius Data Sets page for more information.
