Overview

The SubsetAgent/GetData Application Programming Interface (API) provides a simple way to search and access NSIDC's data holdings that are hosted through Searchlight. The SubsetAgent/GetData API was created off of the Polaris interface, and it allows for the search and customization (subsetting, reprojection, and reformatting) of NSIDC data with immediate downloads. However, we currently only support 13 data sets. Refer to Table 1 for a listing of the 13 data sets that we currently support. The Long Name in Table 1 is a link to the data set documentation. You can use the data set documentation to find pertinent information for your data query such as temporal coverage and spatial coverage to name just a few.

Using the SubsetAgent/GetData API

If you are familiar with using APIs and don't need help setting up the SubsetAgent/GetData API, see our SubsetAgent/GetData Description Document. If you are not familiar with APIs and would like help, follow the directions given below.

  1. Paste the following URL into the URL field of a browser, adding the appropriate parameter values to define your query string. Use Table 2 to navigate to the appropriate table that lists the parameter values for the data set you want.

Note: The query string is case sensitive and the search is not a free text search, but a very structured search. The ? in the query string separates the URL from the parameters, and the & separates the variables. The query string can contain all or any combination of the parameters; however, the query string must contain at least the Data Set ID and your e-mail address. All other parameters are optional.

5You can use the BBOX parameter to create a polygon. The polygon is defined in latitude / longitude pairs, in clockwise order around the polygon, with the last point being the same as the first in order to close the polygon.
