Background: The Poles of Cold are the places in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres where the lowest air temperature was recorded. In the Southern Hemisphere, the Pole of Cold is in Antarctica near the Russian Vostok station at 78.47°S, 106.8°E where a temperature of -89.2°C (-129.8°F) was recorded on 21 July 1983.
