Part of the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES), NSIDC archives analog and digital cryospheric data and creates and provides information about snow cover and avalanches, glaciers and ice sheets, floating ice, ground ice and permafrost, atmospheric ice, paleoglaciology and ice cores. Funded primarily by NASA, NSIDC is also host to cryospheric research grants from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Our mission is to make fundamental contributions to cryospheric science and excel in managing data and disseminating information in order to advance understanding of the Earth system and the changes being detected.
