NSIDC Database Administrator (DBA)

The National Snow and Ice Data Center is looking for a Database Administrator (DBA) to manage relational database management systems which store information and metadata for Earth science, funded by NASA, the National Science Foundation, and the National Atmospheric and Oceanic Administration. Come work with some of the top cryospheric scientists in the world. Help manage the data and create the tools scientists use to research the world's frozen realms, working in an agile environment with developers and IT professionals who love their jobs, with a great work/life balance.

We are looking for an experienced, self-motivated individual to work on a number of newly-funded, exciting projects that will enhance our continued growth. Many of the projects include creation and management of databases that support rich GIS technologies or geospatial components. Some examples include

Job Overview

The DBA will administer relational database management systems used to store information and metadata that describes Earth science data products maintained by NSIDC. As DBA you will design database systems and procedures that make use of Earth-orbiting satellite data as well as aircraft- and ground-based data sets. The assigned responsibilities generally include

Required Qualifications

Education

Bachelors degree from an accredited higher education institution, coursework in computer science, information systems, database administration or other related fields preferred.

Training and Experience

A minimum of two years professional experience administering commercial or open source database management systems, such as MySQL or Postgres in a UNIX environment. Candidates must possess knowledge of Structured Query Language (SQL), and XML, database server administration and an ability to design and maintain relational database schemas.

Work-Related Skills

Use a variety of programming languages, databases, and operating systems on multiple platforms; ability to set priorities, analyze problems, develop solutions, and make decisions on a variety of complex matters; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with staff and clients; research and evaluate software applications.

Desirable Skills
