We offer online access to scientific data and information to a broad community of scientific users. We have a variety of interesting, meaningful technical and design challenges to solve, and we have recently tackled searching (NSIDC Data Search and the Arctic Data Explorer), exposing data to broad audiences (Greenland Today, Arctic Sea Ice News and Analysis, and Satellite Observations of Arctic Change), and incorporating data management best practices (Digital Object Identifier Landing Pages and Schema.org tagging).

How we do it:

We enjoy a casual environment with good benefits, generous vacation and sick time, and flexible schedules. We work with talented people in a collaborative environment. Our software development staff is organized into small teams, and we use Agile methods. We create cross-functional project teams to produce a variety of Web applications. We challenge each other to learn new skills and consistently improve our craftsmanship and take pride in creating quality software applications in intelligent ways.

About you:

You are a mid- to senior-level designer with well-developed aesthetic skills and solid Web design skills. You know what makes software usable, and you can articulate the principles behind your design decisions. You enjoy collaborating with developers and designers. You are familiar with Agile practices and have worked alongside software developers. You have done front-end programming in HTML5, CSS, JavaScript, and possibly worked with CSS preprocessors like Sass or Less before. You have a portfolio demonstrating a clean finished design that you can share with us, and you can talk about challenges in those and other designs. You can also share JavaScript code samples.

You work well in a team environment, and enjoy learning from and mentoring others on the team. You have the experience and confidence to disagree when appropriate, and the soft skills to do so respectfully. You take pride in your ability to incorporate feedback in your designs from test users and other designers. You are excited by solving technical and design problems, especially in the intersection of the two.
